Beautiful Rivers & Streams : This gallery is composed of photos taken of those beautiful rivers and streams that flow in the Pacific Northwest. They are also the rivers and streams my wife and I have flyfished for trout and steelhead for more than 25 years. (For me it is over 40 years) So, it is no wonder they hold a very close and intimate position in our hearts and memories.

Wheat & Pea Harvest Farming Scenes : Most of the scenes in this gallery show the harvesting of wheat on the steep hillsides commonly found near Walla Walla in Southeastern Washington. This is the only major area in the world that the combines harvesting these steep hillsides must be modified to automatically level the central body of the combine thereby allowing the proper threshing and cleaning of the crop. As you can see in the photos, the central body is kept level while the header cutting the wheat is controlled by the huge wheels and tires forming the undercarriage as they conform to the steep contour of the land. The steepness of the hillsides makes it impossible to negotiate these fields without this specialized equipment. The hot and dry conditions during harvest always presents the highest and most dangerous levels of fire hazard. Although not shown, extra tractors coupled with disk harrows are stationed nearby ready to encircle and isolate any fires that may be started. The harvest of dry peas is similar using the same equipment but modified for dry peas. The harvest of green peas is totally different with the processor doing the harvesting rather than the farmer but the harvest is interesting as is the equipment.

North Fork of the Clearwater & Kelly Creek : The North Fork of the Clearwater and Kelly Creek are in a remote area of the Clearwater National Forest. Their headwaters beginning almost on the Montana border inspire a trip to view its wonders. At one time it held the spawning sites of a strain of the biggest wild steelhead in the US weighing up to 30 lbs. To make this journey it began at the mouth of the Columbia in mid-summer, thence up the Snake River branching off on the Clearwater River at Lewiston, ID and finally going up the North Fork at Orofino, ID. They still had to negotiate another 100 miles of fast water and tumultous rapids before they would reach their spawning sites. Total journey was over 500 miles so it is no wonder they had to be big to survive this three month trip. Now that run is no more because Dvorsak Dam on the North Fork has blocked this passage. Even though It is a remote area with only forest roads for access, it still remains an interesting destination for hikers, campers and for fishermen trying their luck on westslope cutthroat trout that inhabit these wild waters. .And also, for others like me and my wife, who like to take lasting memories of these wild and scenic streams.

Deschutes River : The Deschutes River is a major tributary of the lower Columbia flowing through some of the most rugged basalt cliffs in the Northwest. For hundreds of years it has been one of the major sites for the Indian fisheries at Sherar's Falls. It still attracts some Indian netters. Now the area immediately above and below Maupin, OR is a favorite destination for whitewater rafters extending downstream to Mack's Canyon. The next 30 miles beyond Mack's Canyon is accessible only for boaters and is usually a three day float to the mouth at the Columbia River. This lower section is a favorite for fly fishing steelhead anglers that also gain access from the mouth upstream for 20 miles by jet sled and even some who bicycle up a trail for a few miles, camp overnight and have first shot at their favorite runs following sunup.

The Mighty Columbia River : These photos cover the segment of this great river beginning at Grand Coulee Dam in Eastern Washington and continuing downstream to a point near Cascade Locks in Oregon a few miles above Bonneville Dam.There is still another 125 miles below reaching all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Lewis and Clark and their Discovery crew travelled the full extent from Wallula Gap to the Pacific in 1805 and retraced their steps on their return in 1806. The magnitude and diversities of this world renowned river now comprises eight hydro electric dams (five of which are shown), provides river barge traffic transporting grain, lumber and petroleum products from the Pacific inland as far as Lewiston, ID on the Snake River. It has major railroads on both sides of the lower river, supports irrigation for millions of acres growing wheat, hay, potatoes, orchards, and wine vinyards. It is the pathway for migrating salmon and steelhead seeking to reach their spawning sites on journies up to 450 miles to upper tributaries to repeat their reproductive process. It still provides a wide array of commercial Indian net fishing, sport fishing and other recreational activities. This is a small effort to show its beauty and diversity and some of its tie to history. I hope it is interesting and enjoyable to the viewer.

Dry Falls of the Columbia : The geological history of the Grand Coulee of Eastern Washington discloses that about 10,000 years ago a series of glacial ice plugs damming a huge lake, near what is now Missoula, MT, periodicaly broke loose and created walls of water 300 feet high cascading over these 400 foot high basalt cliffs making the largest waterfall ever known on earth. Each release continued downstream gouging out huge depressions in the layered basalt of this Grand Coulee Canyon for another 60 miles forming many lakes, some of which are shown, namely Dry Falls, Deep, Perch, Sun Lakes, Blue and Lenore. It has been estimated the flows of water equalled what would be many times the combined flows of all the rivers in the world today. For more precise viewing, suggest you look under Photo Sizes and choose either Large or Original.

There are numerous settler sites dotting the landscapes with homesteads and barns that still give stark testimony to the broken hopes and dreams of those early farmers and cattlemen.

Salmon & Steelhead Flies : The salmon flies are part of my collection that were tied by famous tiers, such as Hardy's and Farlow's in England, some 100 years ago. The steelhead flies were tied by me and are only a few of a large collection, but they are my favorites and have produced some record size steelhead. The long hackles of the Spey style pulse and 'breathe' as it sifts through the surface film on the river with decided animation and usually produces a visible take. I greatly prefer the Alec Jackson Spey Style hook because once taken, it is very secure. Also, when fished, the barb is always turned down so the fish can be released easily and without harm. All of the patterns have been fished with delight but the flies with the barb still upright are some that have yet to see the water.
